Minister Manickchand meeting with residents

Residents of Bare Root on the East Coast of Demerara are set to benefit from a series of long-term infrastructure improvements, including a new community centre, upgraded roads and bridge construction.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand made the announcements during a recent community engagement, where residents raised concerns about access, drainage and public amenities.
The minister highlighted that work is already underway to regularise land in the area — a crucial step before construction of the community centre can begin. She also pledged to replace a damaged community sign recognising a young female achiever and said discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Agriculture regarding a previously promised bridge.
“We’re working with you to get the land regularised so we can build the community centre. We’ll replace the sign of the young girl who did very well, and we have to talk to Minister Zulfikar Mustapha about finishing the bridge that was promised, and continuing the road,” Manickchand told residents.
The minister cautioned that while the government remains committed to development, not all projects can happen immediately, noting that legal and procurement processes must be followed. She explained that smaller, visible works — such as cleaning and signage — can begin quickly, but larger infrastructure projects like roads and bridges require careful planning, approvals and coordination across multiple agencies.
“I don’t believe in promising things that don’t happen overnight. Roads and bridges take time because we have to follow the law and the procurement process. Just because you don’t see everything immediately doesn’t mean we’re not working for you. I am your servant,” Manickchand assured the community.
Reflecting on earlier interventions, the minister pointed to efforts to extend electricity and water services in Bare Root, which involved negotiations with the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), as well as flexible payment arrangements for residents.
She emphasised that similar people-centred development projects continue nationwide, even when progress is not immediately visible. According to Manickchand, the government remains focused on improving infrastructure and quality of life across Guyana, ensuring that long-term benefits are realised for communities like Bare Root.
