As holiday traffic increases across Region Four, the Guyana Police Force has intensified its annual Christmas Policing programme, with Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh urging road users to exercise caution as digitised monitoring systems continue to support enforcement efforts.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 programme, Singh warned drivers against dangerous driving, reckless parking, and other risky behaviour that endangers public safety during what is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

He noted that the Force’s digital monitoring tools remain fully active.

“The dangerous driving is being captured via SRIS [Safe Road Intelligent System], the Safe City and we’ve put mitigating steps. Comply with the rules of the road,” he said.

Singh also highlighted persistent issues such as driving on road shoulders during heavy traffic and leaving vehicles parked in hazardous or obstructive positions. He reminded drivers that these violations will not be overlooked, particularly as the Force prepares to roll out its numeric point system.

He stressed that violations by drivers of state-owned vehicles will not be exempt.

“Don’t think for one moment that because the vehicle belongs to a state or government agency you’re exempted. The agency or entity is exempted, you’re an employee. You can or will be ticketed or charged,” he said.

The Traffic Chief further urged motorists to pay attention to digital speed radar signs installed along major roadways.

“Comply with speed radar signs – those signs help you to understand the rate of speed you’re traveling at, and you must make the adjustments. They’re along the entire stretch on the East Coast, East Bank, Region Three, and they’re being rolled out in other regions. Those digital signs you see and you pay no heed to, they play an important role as a reminder to you the road users,” he added.

Senior officers also outlined additional measures that will support Georgetown and regional policing throughout the festive season. These include increased patrols across several platforms, such as foot, motorcycle, bicycle, and drone surveillance, all aimed at enhancing citizen safety and managing heightened traffic volumes.

The updated systems and expanded patrols form part of the Force’s broader effort to maintain order and reduce accidents during the peak Christmas period.
