Pupils of St. Gabriel’s Primary School are now part of the expanding Harmony Club, a programme by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) and the Ministry of Education that fosters unity, respect, and teamwork in schools.

The club, first launched at Stella Maris Primary School, provides pupils with a space to learn about inclusion, cultural appreciation, and understanding one another’s differences.

Speaking at the St. Gabriel’s launch on Wednesday, ERC Chairman Shaikh Moeenul Hack reinforced the oneness of humanity and urged pupils to learn more about the cultures of all ethnic groups residing in Guyana. “We are all equal and should treat each other with respect,” he underscored, while noting that if peace, love, and unity exist within the school, it will also extend outside the learning institution as pupils inculcate the values taught in the Harmony Club.

Deputy Chief Education Officer (Development), Ms. Volika Jaikishun, who also spoke at the event, pledged the ministry’s continued support and highlighted the long-term benefits of the initiative in tackling negative issues, including bullying in schools. “So, you will spread the word demonstrating love, peace and unity wherever you go,” she told the young audience.

Teacher at St. Gabriel’s Primary, Thilia Fraser, said the club’s activities will be integrated into the school’s existing programmes and that pupils are already eager to participate.

“The children can’t wait to get started. The overall goal is to help them see the value of respect and cooperation, no matter their background,” she said.

With eight more schools expected to join the programme before the end of the year, the ERC continues to expand its message of togetherness across Guyana’s classrooms — building a culture of understanding one school at a time.
