Some 3,000 to 4,000 Region Three families who applied for land up to 2024 will receive provisional allocation letters for house lots by September, President Dr Irfaan Ali announced on Saturday.
During a meeting with residents at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, the President noted that lands in Wales had been allocated to families under the previous administration following the closure of the sugar estates.
However, after assuming office in 2020, the current government reclaimed these lands.
“You’ll receive a letter of provisional allocation and will be able to visit the development site and see your lot. So, start saving for the construction of your home,” he urged residents.
The President highlighted that significant investments have been made in housing over the past four years, with nearly $65 billion spent in the region to accelerate home ownership for thousands of residents.
This, he said, marks a 1,321 per cent increase over the previous administration.
Additionally, a substantial $28 billion has been spent on roads, highways, and bridges in the region, providing significant relief for commuters and pedestrians.
Furthermore, the President stated that bids are currently being invited for a major road link from Parika to Goshen.
He added that by the end of August, “we will identify all the bridges up to Wales for bidding. And what is the plan? The plan is a four-lane road to Parika, continuing to Goshen Road, leading to Bartica, then connecting back to Sandhills, all the way to Timehri. That is the vision.”
He reiterated that this project is not just about constructing a road but also about opening up tens of thousands of acres of land to support agricultural expansion.
To further boost agriculture, President Ali announced that a fertiliser plant will be established in the region to supply the country’s agricultural needs. Additionally, a steel production partnership is currently being pursued.
This initiative forms part of the administration’s holistic vision to develop a manufacturing and industrial powerhouse.
The hub will be supported by 600 megawatts (MW) of power projects to advance Guyana’s industrial aspirations.
Currently, a gas-to-energy project is being developed in Wales, transporting natural gas from the Stabroek Block’s Liza oilfield to an integrated facility.
As part of this project, a 300 MW combined-cycle power plant is being constructed to supply power to citizens, with a second power plant also planned for the region
To enhance healthcare services for residents, the government is constructing a new state-of-the-art West Demerara Regional Hospital, along with another at De Kinderen on the West Coast Demerara.
The Head of State stated that these ongoing efforts aim to transform Guyana into a regional leader in energy, food security, education, and healthcare while ensuring economic prosperity for all.
He also urged citizens to look beyond race and politics, emphasising that the government he leads is focused on service and development, not opportunism.
During the meeting, several community issues were raised, prompting President Ali to immediately instruct the relevant agencies to address them. (DPI)
