Brava Guyana bridges digital gap at Mercy Wings

Students and teachers at Mercy Wings Academic Foundation now enjoy high-speed, reliable Internet access following Brava Guyana’s recent installation and sponsorship of free fibre service at the institution in Sophia.
Patricia Liverpool, the school’s administrator, emphasised the importance of Internet access for research, online learning, and the use of interactive educational tools in the classroom.
“This contribution means a lot to us. Reliable Internet access allows our students and teachers to engage in research, enhance their learning experience, and better prepare for the future. We are thankful to Brava Guyana for stepping in to support our educational journey,” she said.
Mercy Wings, operated by the Sisters of Mercy since 2000 under the name Mercy Wings Vocational Centre, transitioned from a skills-based training centre to a full secondary school in September 2024.
Consequently, the need for Internet services became crucial, particularly since the new curriculum includes Information Technology (IT) and Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM). The school currently has 36 students enrolled in Grades 7 to 10.
Yvonne Moses, one of the school’s IT and EDPM teachers, noted that since the fibre service was installed in January 2025 – with the support of One Communications – students and teachers have been maximising the use of a vast array of online educational resources that support various learning styles.
“Students and teachers are utilising collaborative tools such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and other educational applications. This collaboration encourages teamwork and improves communication between students and teachers. Teachers have been able to make lessons more engaging and interactive as they embrace digital technology,” she said.
Hilton Wong, Brava Guyana’s General Manager, stated that this initiative aligns with the company’s broader commitment to fostering educational development in local communities and bridging the digital divide.
“We believe that connectivity is a fundamental part of education in today’s world. We are proud to support Mercy Wings Academic Foundation and the incredible work being done by the Sisters of Mercy to provide quality education for these students. By ensuring they have free, reliable Internet, we are helping to create opportunities for learning and growth for the future of Guyana,” he concluded.
