Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 18:40 hours on Friday on the Perth Public Road, Essequibo Coast, which claimed the lives of three persons.

According to a police release, the accident involved motor car #HB 7377, owned and driven by Ezekiel Stanuel, a 69-year-old farmer of Lot 39 Public Road, Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast; motorcycle #CN 6561, owned and driven by Leon Marks (now deceased), a 62-year-old from Lot 214 Hoppie Street, Dartmouth, along with pillion rider Reion Alphonso (now deceased), a 28-year-old from Lot 660 Charity Extension Scheme, Essequibo Coast; and another motorcycle, owned and driven by Davenand Bernard (now deceased), an 18-year-old from Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast.

According to police inquiries, motor car #HB 7377 was travelling north in the western driving lane when the driver, Ezekiel Stanuel, alleged that a motorcycle was approaching from the opposite direction at a high speed, emitting a loud noise and displaying a bright light that reduced his visibility.

Another motorcycle was following behind the car in the same direction. The car’s driver said he slowed down and stopped his vehicle.

The motorcycle behind him then overtook and collided head-on with the oncoming motorcycle.

A loud impact and an explosion followed, with both motorcycles becoming engulfed in flames.

The pillion rider was thrown onto the windshield of the car before landing on the roadway, along with both motorcyclists, who sustained multiple injuries.

Davenand Bernard, who fell onto the roadway near his motorcycle, suffered severe burns to the upper part of his body.

Leon Marks was found unconscious and transported to the Oscar Joseph Hospital (Charity), where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body is at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Davenand Bernard was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is currently at the hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Reion Alphonso was initially treated at the Oscar Joseph Hospital (Charity) before being transferred via ambulance to the Suddie Public Hospital.

Despite being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.

His body is also at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the car was arrested and taken into custody at the Anna Regina Police Station, where he is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
