President Ali: Diplomacy, innovation, nimbleness cornerstone of defence strategy

Illegal migration, border threats, and other transnational crimes are among the numerous challenges that could intensify as Guyana continues to develop and establish itself within the global community.

The country’s rise as a relatively new oil and gas powerhouse also exposes it to various external threats, which the nation’s military must be prepared to anticipate and counter.

These were the sentiments of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali when he addressed Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers at their Annual Officers’ Conference 2025, held at Camp Ayanganna today.

The Head of State emphasised that to protect its assets and borders, the nation’s military must integrate technology into its defence strategy. He stated that the military must align its approach with future advancements, particularly in innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology.

In this complex global environment, the President highlighted that military agility, diplomacy, innovation, and technological advancement are the cornerstones of Guyana’s defence strategy. Strength will no longer be evaluated solely based on human capital and fixed physical assets but on the ability to transform strategy in alignment with future developments.

To achieve this agenda, the nation must recognise its key allies. President Ali stressed the importance of identifying “unshakable, reliable allies” to ensure military strategy is informed by critical analysis. He added that these partnerships should be assessed based on shared prosperity and economic development.

He pointed out that Guyana’s key strategic partner, the United States, has prioritised border security and asset protection in response to external threats. As Guyana continues to grow, the country is projected to have a production per capita higher than Kuwait. With international partners increasingly viewing Guyana as a strategic ally in fulfilling their energy needs, stability will be crucial, he noted.

It is essential to acknowledge the challenges that accompany these advancements. Migration patterns, for instance, are often linked to economic prosperity and may evolve as Guyana’s economy expands.

The President also addressed additional concerns, including the Venezuelan migrant crisis, human trafficking, drug and gun smuggling, and other illicit activities. As Guyana emerges as a key economic player, these issues will require increased attention and strategic responses.
